Click below listen Faiz’s recitation of this qitaa.

If you have not listened to Nayyara Noor’s rendition of “raat yun dil mein teri khoyi hui yaad aayi” in Dhoop Kinaray, then you have not yet enjoyed its beauty.

Click below to let it amaze you, yet again.

And if you want download the mp3 version, right click the file, and save: raat yun dil mein

Also, here is the “hansi khanakti hui” audio by Nayyara Noor from Dhoop Kinare: hansi khanakti hui

raat yuuN dil meN terii khoyii hu’ii yaad aayii
jaise viiraane meN chupke se bahaar aa jaaye
jaise sehraaoN meN hauley se chale baad-e-nasiim
jaise biimaar ko be-vajh qaraar aa jaaye

Here are a few translations of this quartain taken from Aditya Johri’s page.

Translation by Agha Shahid Ali, from A Rebel’s Silhouette:

At night my lost memory of you returned

and I was like the empty field where springtime,
without being noticed, is bringing flowers;

I was like the desert over which
the breeze moves gently, with great care;

I was like the dying patient
who, for no reason, smiles.

Tanslation by Sarvat Rahman, from 100 Poems by Faiz Ahmed Faiz:

Last night, your long-lost memory came back to me as though
Spring stealthily should come to a forsaken wilderness
A gentle breeze its fragrance over burning deserts blow
Or, all at once be soothed somehow the sick soul’s distress.

Translation by Vikram Seth, from Mappings:

Last night your faded memory came to me
As in the wilderness spring comes quietly,
As, slowly, in the desert, moves the breeze,
As, to a sick man, without cause, comes peace.

I chanced upon this link for the song while doing a random google search. As I listened to the lyrics unfoding in Nayyara Noor’s lilting voice, I felt a fullness in my heart I hadn’t felt in a long time :) As with everyone here, this tv serial and the soundtrack is linked to my beautiful childhood memories of watching Dhoop Kianare, Ankahi and Tanhanyiena in India. We were one of the few families who owned a ‘VCP’ (Video Cassette Player) in the mid eighties; naturally our more than enthusiastic neighbours would join us during the ‘Dhoop Kinare’ sessions! Also like others here, I didn’t understand the words, let alone the string of sentences then. The translations here made me realize how shockingly beautiful the lyrics are. Thank you whomsoever did this favour to so many of us! I’ve already listened to the four lines about a hundred time! :) Cheers.

The lyrics… the melody… true diamond…so much so that even though the first few lines of this ghazal were heard many many years ago its brilliance bought me to this site today where on reading the complete ghazal I feel in awe….almost making that journey with the person being punished for falling in love…..thank you….

Jahaan kharaab sahi hum, badan dareedaa sahi
Teri talaash me nikle hain, paa bureedaa sahi

Jahaan e she’r me meri kayee riyaasaten hain !!
Main apne shahr me gumnam o na shaneedaa sahi

Bhale hi chhaaoN na de, aasraa to detaa hai
Ye aarzu ka shajar hai, khazaaN raseedaa sahi

Inhi bujhi hui aankhoN me khaab aaye gaa

Ta’alluqaat hamaare agar kasheedaa sahi

Gham hai ya ezteraar sa kuch hai
Yaa mujhe intezaar sa kuchh hai

Be sabab aur kaun bhatke ga
Dil hai aur be qarar sa kuch hai

Jab bhi chahun udas hojaun!
Khud pe ab ikhteyar sa kuch hai

Zindagi itni badnumaa to nahi
Aayeene pe ghubar sa kuch hai

Ab gumaN ho raha hai manzil ka
Saamne regzaar sa kuch hai

Hauslon ko abhi pata na chale
Raste me hisaar sa kuch hai !

Bas tere liye udaas aankhen !!!!
uff! maslehat nashanaas aankhen

Be noor hui hian dheere dheere
Aayi nahi mujh ko raas aankhen!

Aakhir ko gaya wo – kaash rukta
Karti rahin iltemaas aankhen!!

Khaabeeda haqiqaton ki maari
Paamaal aur bad hawaas aankhen

Dar pesh junu.n ka marhala, aur
Faqa hai badan to pyas aankhen

Dhoop Kinarey – Rahat Kazmi and Marina Khan has been my all time favourite. First saw it when I was 15 years old. was in search of it. A Pakistani friend brought the DVD. When I saw it again I prided myself for loving one of the best serials. Especially the songs Raat yun dil me………, and Main tumse na puchhun……..
GREAT. Acting – SUPERB. I listen to the songs as and when I feel the mood. Remember I have the DVD. LUCKY ME NA!!!!!!!

Of course Nayyara Noor has no match when it comes to singing Faiz, but somehow she could not do justice with this one. I wish I could download the recitation by Faiz.
