Click below listen Faiz’s recitation of this qitaa.

If you have not listened to Nayyara Noor’s rendition of “raat yun dil mein teri khoyi hui yaad aayi” in Dhoop Kinaray, then you have not yet enjoyed its beauty.

Click below to let it amaze you, yet again.

And if you want download the mp3 version, right click the file, and save: raat yun dil mein

Also, here is the “hansi khanakti hui” audio by Nayyara Noor from Dhoop Kinare: hansi khanakti hui

raat yuuN dil meN terii khoyii hu’ii yaad aayii
jaise viiraane meN chupke se bahaar aa jaaye
jaise sehraaoN meN hauley se chale baad-e-nasiim
jaise biimaar ko be-vajh qaraar aa jaaye

Here are a few translations of this quartain taken from Aditya Johri’s page.

Translation by Agha Shahid Ali, from A Rebel’s Silhouette:

At night my lost memory of you returned

and I was like the empty field where springtime,
without being noticed, is bringing flowers;

I was like the desert over which
the breeze moves gently, with great care;

I was like the dying patient
who, for no reason, smiles.

Tanslation by Sarvat Rahman, from 100 Poems by Faiz Ahmed Faiz:

Last night, your long-lost memory came back to me as though
Spring stealthily should come to a forsaken wilderness
A gentle breeze its fragrance over burning deserts blow
Or, all at once be soothed somehow the sick soul’s distress.

Translation by Vikram Seth, from Mappings:

Last night your faded memory came to me
As in the wilderness spring comes quietly,
As, slowly, in the desert, moves the breeze,
As, to a sick man, without cause, comes peace.

Also, here is the video of hasi khanakti hui:

The song has got memories which cannot be wiped from one’s mind…..

The purity of the lyrics, and the crystal clear voice of Nayyara Noor add to the subtle beauty and charm of this very old ghazal….. it’s truly a must for people who’ve anytime been in love, or who believe in the principles of the power of love….

MANI February 18, 2006 at 7:42 pm

Oh my god..This is such an amazing ghazal..It’s been like 15 yrs since I saw Dhoop Kinaray and I have searched for this musical ghazal for so many years and now that I can finally hear it again, it brings back those memories…memories of love and wanting to be with someone and the sad end to the love..watching her be with someone else and not being able to do anything about it but just cry at night thinking about her..Anyways.. enough about my pathetic love life (or the lack of it)..great work guys..thank you so much for the ghazal..

This is like finding a rare gem- thank you!

Hira May 30, 2006 at 8:53 pm

To me this is not mere poetry, but words that seem to be divinely inspired. With every word Faiz Sahib proves that he has seen life from very close, and today he lives in the hearts of thousands. He is immortal. His words are timeless.

i am a great admirer of fiaz sahib. when i was young, it was the time of opression and tyrany of zia ul haq. my father used to recite faiz sahib’s poems to me and explained his thoughts. he was a great figure who was over shadowed by the personality of most obtuse, meanest and lowest kind of dictator. great misfortune for a nation….

samera September 26, 2006 at 1:59 am

This is a truly amazing houner 2 read, i am new 2 this poet and hve jst found out what i hve mised, he has inspired me as i two right poetry. Hes amazing.

Aatif Khan October 6, 2006 at 12:31 am

Sometimes words are really not enough to explain about someone who we really cares or somethings which truly reflects our feelings and this song is one of them,of course the drama “Dhoop Kinaray” itself is very great. The true meanings and relationships in ones life is explained in such a way that it’s worth for me cannot be shown in words.I am really happy that I have got it today.

Azpher Rizvi October 10, 2006 at 3:31 pm

Many thanks for bringing this here on your forum.

Zana Khan October 30, 2006 at 11:30 am

Words fail me. I can see that I am not the only one that is so touched by this ghazal and Nayyara Noor’s haunting voice. I loved Dhoop Kinare and for me even today it is the best TV play to come out of Pakistan.
Thank you for sharing.

Yasir November 22, 2006 at 12:15 pm

Even though I donot belong to the Dhoop Kinaray generation…. watching the serial as well as (Tanhaiyaan, Aangan Tehra, Unkahi & 50/50) in this modern era simply made me realize the fact that how unlucky I am ….that I wasn’t granted by ALLAH a chance to live during the 1970′s & 1980′s….

This ghazal is my favourite….offcourse beautifuly written by Mr. Faiz and sung (by Nayarra Noor)… i really wonder …whenever I hear this ghazal….it engenders a chimera…as if I was watching the song in 1987!

thanks allot for this contribution!

Moudud S December 15, 2006 at 10:11 pm

Thank you very much. May you be rewarded/granted the wish for which you have posted this song up on this site.
Amazing lyrics, music, voice etc, etc, etc, etc……………………………

Sonia December 20, 2006 at 4:06 am

Can anybody send me the link to another song which appeared in Dhoop Kinare. It was “Hansi Khanakti Huyi” or even the name of the song ie what are the starting Lyrics.

Been frantically searching for it.

Sunil December 20, 2006 at 2:39 pm

My O My! I have searched for this thing everywhere. This really brings back memories which I thought were lost. I have seen the play two times (once in the 80′s on ptv) and the ghazal I have heard may be thousand times on that old vhs tape my brother had back in delhi, when I was in India 10 years ago.

This is probably the simplest of the most poetic and romantic Urdu lyrics ever. And greatest of them all too!!

I can’t thank you enough!!

Mahrukh Ahsan December 22, 2006 at 4:50 am

Some things keep haunting you forever…this is one of them!

Not only does this song bring back pleasant memories of my childhood, it also goes to show how great our television industry used to be! Everything was perfect at that time!!

Sonia January 4, 2007 at 8:51 pm

Hi ! Who can forget the very soulful ‘Hansi Khanakti Hui’ sung by Nayyara Noor from Dhoop Kinare. Had been searching for it and actually got my little friend – Yadu to split it from the video.

Here is a link for all the Dhoop Kinare fans -

2.2.07…hiiii….ohhhh my God!!!!!!!!!!!at last i got the full ghazal ,what i was always looking for and was eager to listen the melody of this great ghazal n the spirit ….behind it…it realy makes you feel as if you are in the another world ..a world which used to be for you n the world still is just meant for you …that reminds the existance of love …..and what better way to do it than through verse….and at times the poem in itself symbolize a subtle lonliness, of a soul and sure , the theme of the poem is obviously”pining for the beloved”and i still watch DHOOPKINAREY just to get to tuned to the lyrics of the greatest poet ”Faiz sb”and i always as to get tuned to these verses find my soul flying around in vast cosmos……and still feel a kind of void in me…..which binds to make me feel myself and and give me some time to still peep into my backyard soul……thanx for reminding of my old days ”again what could be better than the verse itself”and its really very haunting at times…..coz the memories of yester years some times make you grow and some times make you giggle and some times make you cry even……so thank you for making me feel n going through every emotion of mine……i am just some how deeply attached to this ghazal as it feels me that its the soul of me ..the real soul ……,,,Farzana siddiqui

Thanks a lot for this gazal – I have always loved the title track of Dhoop Kinarey.

Shukriya once again.

Deepak March 2, 2007 at 1:32 am

When I heard this ghazal years ago as a teenager in India it remained in my mind forever. I had despaired of ever finding it again until now. What is most incredible is how it seems to have touched so many other hearts the same way! In my mind this is probably the greatest work of music and poetry ever, given that it remained in my memory for so many years without fading! Thanks for uploading, and thanks to all those who posted their thoughts in response … it is heartening to see that even in this mechanical modern world there are people out there with hearts and souls!!!
