raat yuuN dil meN terii khoyii hu’ii yaad aayii
jaise viiraane meN chupke se bahaar aa jaaye
jaise sehraaoN meN hauley se chale baad-e-nasiim
jaise biimaar ko be-vajh qaraar aa jaaye

Here are a few translations of this quartain taken from Aditya Johri’s page.

Translation by Agha Shahid Ali, from A Rebel’s Silhouette:

At night my lost memory of you returned

and I was like the empty field where springtime,
without being noticed, is bringing flowers;

I was like the desert over which
the breeze moves gently, with great care;

I was like the dying patient
who, for no reason, smiles.

Tanslation by Sarvat Rahman, from 100 Poems by Faiz Ahmed Faiz:

Last night, your long-lost memory came back to me as though
Spring stealthily should come to a forsaken wilderness
A gentle breeze its fragrance over burning deserts blow
Or, all at once be soothed somehow the sick soul’s distress.

Translation by Vikram Seth, from Mappings:

Last night your faded memory came to me
As in the wilderness spring comes quietly,
As, slowly, in the desert, moves the breeze,
As, to a sick man, without cause, comes peace.

Mushal May 1, 2007 at 5:57 am

I saw Dhoop Kinaray for the 1st time about 8-9 years ago, when it was being rebroadcast on PTV. They are showing it again nowadays, but I decided to get the DVD…which cost me about 200/-…but it is most definitely worth it. I am totally in love with the drama, all the characters were superb.

It is soooo wonderful to have the songs on my computer now. Thanks a lot for posting the links.

shahida May 1, 2007 at 7:57 am

I cannot begin to explain how long I have been looking for this song. And there’s no better way to stumble upon it, than amidst so many other people who appreciate its melodic beauty and poignance.

Dhoop Kinare and Raat Yun- I am completely speechless. One of the finest serials with innocense, romance, fun and emotions. The song- I mean, only brings be back to my childhood. Someone with a good taste and an eye for class could only get this on the website.

Anu Pandit September 7, 2007 at 3:57 am

Hi,

I’ve been looking for ‘Hansi Khanakti Hui’ from Dhoop Kinare for ages, and I can’t tell you how excited I was when I found the link on your site (without having to necessarily use YouTube!!) except that the link doesn’t work!!!! :(
Is there any other way that I can get Nayyara Noor’s rendition of it?
Thanks a ton.

Anu Pandit September 7, 2007 at 5:10 am

I watched Dhoop Kinare whe growing up. Two Pakistani plays were my favourites – Dhoop Kinare and Tanhayaen. I just loved this nazm and am thrilled to have stumbled on this. Fabulous!

Does anyone have the kajri from this play? “Menhdi se likh do hathon pe mere..” or it may have been from Tanhaiyan, I am not sure though I think it was from Dhoop Kinare.

ritu October 8, 2007 at 12:25 pm

AWEOSOME, I JUST LOVE IT, EXCELLENT POETRY N AWESOME LYRIC OF THE SONG.

naeemAsarmad October 30, 2007 at 4:55 pm

I feel a bit content that there r so many who share the same feelings as I do. And why should not it be? This drama and this ghazal with melodic voice of NN and splendid poetry by Faiz and above all remarkable acting (innocence & expressions)by MK & RK make it the most marvelous work ever produced by PTV. Yes its true that today generation is quite unlucky to be grown amidst a world of materialism, nudity, terror and injustice.

This ghazal and Dhoop Kinare do not take me back to my loving memory lane but just make me cry over & over. But I am happy to view comments from different parts of world that this is common ( & it must be as our God is God of love) in all humans i.e. LOVE AND SINCERITY. And it soothes me so immensely.

navtej November 7, 2007 at 9:13 am

Goodness. Could there be a better comparison of the feelings. desert and breeze, patient feeling better all of a sudden, spring in a barren land. Just need a real heart to appreciate those feelings. Faiz Sahib! may Allah rest u in peace.

No doubt this is a great song…beautiful singing by Nayyara Noor and ofcourse the poetry by Faiz….but also equally brilliant and everlasting element of this song is the music which is done by Arhsad Mahmood… just thought he should be given due credit as well !!
Anyway if anyone needs that song “Hansi Khanakti Hui” the COMPLETE version can email me….and the song “Kahan Ho Tum” is sung by Shanaz Begum…..can anyone tell me whether Nayarra Noor did it as well ? cheers

Bilal Peracha December 27, 2007 at 5:16 am

life is too short while philosophy is unlimited…let us conceive the philosophy of FAIZ in context of his Poetry!

Kashif Ahmed December 30, 2007 at 6:18 am

So lovely to see that the mp3 audio rip I made of “Raat yun dil mein teri” from a Dhoop Kinarey VCD in 2001 is being enjoyed by all now :) I searched endlessly for the music only to take matters in my own hands. Nayyara rendition is so melodic and haunting, I wish it was a full ghazal/song.
