tujhse bicchaR ke ham bhii muqaddar ke ho gaye
phir jo bhii dar mila hai usii dar ke ho gaye

phir yuN hu’aa ke Ghair ko dil se lagaa liyaa
andar vo nafrateN thiiN ke baahar ke ho gaye

kyaa log the ke jaan se baRh kar aziiz the
ab dil se mahv naam bhii aksar ke ho gaye

ai yaad-e-yaar tujh se kareN kyaa shikaayateN
ai dard-e-hijr hum bhii to patthar ke ho gaye

samjhaa rahe the mujh ko sabhii nasehaan-e-shehar
phir raftaa raftaa Khud usii kaafir ke ho gaye

ab ke na intizaar kareN chaaragar kaa ham
ab ke gaye to kuu-e-sitamgar ke ho gaye

rote ho ek jaziira-e-jaaN ko “Faraz” tum
dekho to kitne shah’r samandar ke ho gaye

Ahmed Faraz

    1. I think the third shair goes like this:

Kya log the ke jaan se badh kar azeez the
ab dil se mahv naam bhi aksar ke ho gaye

I don’t know how you transliterate ‘mahv’ in roman urdu, its spelt in Urdu with meem haay and vow.

    2. Thank you Hiba for the correction.

    3. Assalam-O-Alaikum,
I believe it should be “mehv”, thats how we pronunciate it. right?

    4. Beautiful !
Can some one put the meaning of difficult Urdu words here, like is done for other shairs !!

    5. This poem is available in Hindi on Urdu Poetry page.
