Click below listen Iqbal Bano’s beautiful rendition of this nazm.

Click below listen Tina Sani’s version of this nazm.

dasht-e-tanhaii mein ai jaan-e-jahaaN larzaaN hain
teri aawaaz ke saaye, tere hontoN ke saraab
dasht-e-tanhaii mein doori ke khas-o-khaak kitne
khil rahe hain tere pehloo ke saman aur gulaab

dil ke rukhsaar pe is waqt teri yaad ne haath
yun gumaaN hota hai garche abhi subh-e-firaaq
dhal gaya hijr ka din, aa bhi gayi wasl ki raat

Translation by Zafar Iqbal Syed sahab.

In the wasteland of solitude, my love, quiver
shadows of your voice, illusions of your lips.
In the wasteland of solitude, from the dusts of parting
Sprout jasmines and roses of your presence

From somewhere close by, rises the warmth of your breath
and in its own aroma smolders, slowly, bit by bit.
Far-off, across the horizon, drop by glistening drop
Falls the dew of your beguiling glance.
With such overwhelming love, O my love,
your memory has placed its hand on my heart’s cheek,
that it looks as if (though it’s still the dawn of the adieu)
the sun of parting has set; the night of union has come.

A fantastic site all around and manna for a Faiz addict like me. Thank you for this. It has allowed me to share faiz’s poetry with friends not familiar with Urdu

Dasht-e-tanhai is perhaps one of the more popular nazms of indubitable beauty.

I am afraid the link to the version sung by Tina Sani incorrectly but to my great pleasure points to an earlier version sung by Iqbal Bano when she was younger. Tina Sani also sang it very well but this pevious version by Iqbal Bano was a gem

Excellent ………..!!!!!!!!!

farzana siddiqui February 15, 2007 at 5:18 pm

asak,,,, love has no other desire but to fulfil itself,,though through the verse, and how iqbal bano’s deep voice has put all the pain and then the time of meeting the souls…..
‘’shall the day of parting be the day of gathering”???
i just love Faiz sb n the credit here offcourse goes to Muhib sb ,,, specially for them who really wants to read urdu shayree n get them selves aqauainted with all its pain , love n sufferings and pining off course for the beloved ,,,the separation n then the meetings and more over the farewells…anyway…its just gr88 ,, how ever i pour myself into words always get short..bas thodey ko ziyada samajhiye plz…thanx Muhib sb…God bless you….Farzana

I can’t stop listening to thi s ghazal.. each time i get a newer dimension , newer insight … such is the power of Faiz!

Talal August 5, 2007 at 5:33 am

For all those calling it a “ghazal”, this is a “nazm”, not a ghazal.

Waffa August 16, 2007 at 11:51 pm

Thanks for the great website.

Wanted to point out a correction to the Urdu transliteration of Faiz’s “dasht-i-tanhai” in the third line, last word…. should not be ‘kitne’ but ‘tale’.

Regards and best wishes.
