sar-e-aa’iinaa meraa aks hai pas-e-aa’iinaa ko’ii aur hai

maiN kisii ke dast-e-talab meN huuN to kisii ke harf-e-duaa meN huN
maiN nasiib huN kisii aur kaa mujhe maaNgataa ko’ii aur hai

kabhii lauT aayeN to na puuchhnaa sirf dekhnaa baRe Ghaur se

[...] There are quite a few Ghazals and Nazms that have been rendered by more than one singer. ‘roshan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam‘ has been sung by Abida Parveen, Jagjit Singh and Mehdi Hassan, each version unique. But there is one Ghazal that has been sung by no less that 6 singers. You would think that such honour would be given to ustaad shaoraa (master poets). Wrong. It actually is by Saleem Kausar, a young Pakistani poet. The Ghazal in question is ‘maiN Khayaal huuN kisii aur kaa‘. I have listened to Mehdi Hassan, Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali, Raees Khan and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan singing this beautiful Ghazal. [...]
It’s one of the immortal ghazals. And is sung in the exact way, the shaayar must have thought of, by Raees Khan.

Dear Mohib,
I have some problem with translation of pas-e-aa’inaa as in front of mirror, to me pas is behind, therefore this translates into behind the mirror. Correct me if I am wrong.

The Translation of two urdu words is wrong:
Sar-e-Aaina means a mirror which is openly visible
Pas-e-Aaina means a mirror which is hidden
sar-e-aa’iinaa meraa aks hai pas-e-aa’iinaa ko’ii aur hai
means My image is on mirror of open - but in mirror of hidden the image is somebody else’s
Please correct it

I think the original one is best because of its simplicity. If we remove the original one from comparison, Jagjit’s look simplest. But if music is to be added I would wgo ith the most complex but classical way of Ghazal singing of MH.
wah bahut hi umda ghazal . bahut khoob
When I heard the audio clip, I found that…
- one of the stanzas that Salimji has recited is not added here (and that one is one the best ones in this Ghazal… Tujhe dushmano ki khabar na thi, mujhe dosto ka pata na he,…)
- in the stanza “teri roshani meri…” should actually be “meri roshani teri…”
Can someone please update it? It would be awesome to get the complete poetry here.
And as always, it is wonderful to have one place where so many good Ghazals are present.
