yes Usman is absolutely right it is ”khum” a persian word for vessal and a simile for heart in persian and urdu poetry

Hi All,

I just came on this site to find the meaning of KHUM. Looks like it means surahi. However let me know incase it could have some differnt meaning for below ‘sher’.

Udher Balon main kanghi horahi hai
khum nikelta hai,
Idher ruk ruk ke khich khich ke hamara
dum nikelta hai.
Ilahi khair ho, uljhen pe uljhen barti
jati hai,
Na unka khum nikelta hai, na hamara
dum nikelta hai.

This is most remarkable poem of my life.
Although i forgot the name of poet, now got, it is also sung by Abida Parveen very nicely

just to point that the right pronunciation is ‘Samt’ not ‘Simt’
So it must be
Chali Samt -e- ghaib sey ik hawa

Am very happy to visit your site. Downloaded Siraj Aurangabadi’s ghazal, “khabar-e-tahhiyuer-e-ishk—”. I do not have a printer. Sir,

I am afraid that both your goodself and Mr Dawar missed out on the meaning of the word “KHUM” in the relevant verse. Please note that it is “KHUM” (diameterically marked with a “pesh”) and not “KHAM”. KHUM is a persian word meaning “surahi” (wine bottle/decanter). Siraj is drawing a simile here. His is similising the unfulfilled desire with a hundred cups of wine which remained confined, invain, to its receptacle i.e., heart similised with a wine decanter. Noted Urdu literati Pandit Daya Narayana Nigam had compiled an anthology of Indian poets in the 19th century and called it “KHUM KHANA E JAVAID” (the everlasting tavern).
