The following ashaar were written by Talib Baghpati but Mehdi Hassan sings them as part of this Ghazal.

maanaa kii muhabbat kaa chhupaanaa hai muhabbat
chupke se kisii roz jataane ke liye aa

(roz : day)

jaise tujhe aate haiN na aane ke bahaane
aise hii kisii roz na jaane ke liye aa

(bahaane : excuses)

Hiya!! Thanks for the live version. And I am glad you posted the lines by Talib Baghpati as well. Many people miss crediting him.

In a ghazal as aweseome as this, it’s impossible to pick up the ‘best’ sher, but to me the foll. sher is v.special :

ek umr se huuN lazzat-e-giriyaa se bhii mahruum
ai raahat-e-jaaN mujh ko rulaane ke liye aa

Dvija April 3, 2006 at 4:37 pm

thanks for including the meanings of the tougher words; Lazzat-e-giriyaa and compounds such as it evaded my understanding. Despite being a big fan of this Ghazal, I must say my understanding of it has just begun with your post. Beautiful.

Interesting…This is the first time i am reading urdu poetry other than that in the textbooks. I thought i should start with the best poet of present time, so i asked my father and he recommended Ahmed Faraz.

Ahmed feraz bne aise hi kuch sher likh ker urdu simphini me jo naqam bana liya hai woh bahut kam hi shayer ko muyessar hota hai. yeh ek nehayat hi khubsurat ghazal hai .jo ek dard bhare dil ke nehayet hi kareeb hai. is gazal ke lye aapka aur Feraz sahab ka shukrya.

dr.nalinijanardhanan January 14, 2008 at 4:39 am

the beauty of this ghazal rendered melodiously by the king of ghazals is due to the raaga yaman which touches the strings of our heart.

One of my all time favourites. Faraz sees pain inside out – demonstrates his levels of introspection! Amazing poetry and amazing ghazal and amazing raaga. Just perfect!

“ek umr se huuN lazzat-e-giriyaa se bhii mahruum
ai raahat-e-jaaN mujh ko rulaane ke liye aa”

This is like – The masochist cries, “Hit Me”. The sadist says, “No, I won’t”.
