intizaar

chaaNd maddham hai, aasmaaN chup hai
niiNd kii god meN jahaaN chup hai

duur vaadii meN duudhiyaa baadal
jhuk ke parbat ko pyaar karte haiN
dil meN naakaam hasrateN lekar
ham teraa intizaar karte haiN

in bahaaroN ke saaye meN aa jaa
phir muhabbat javaaN rahe na rahe
zindagii tere naa-muraadoN par
kal talak meh’rbaaN rahe na rahe

roz kii tarah aaj bhii taare
subh kii gard meN na kho jaayeN
aa ! tere Gham meN jaagtii aankheN
kam se kam aik raat so jaayeN

chaaNd maddham hai, aasmaaN chup hai
niiNd kii god meN jahaaN chup hai

English Translation by Anisur Rahman from Fire and the Rose: An Anthology of Modern Urdu Poetry

The moon is dim, the high sky silent,
in the lap of sleep, the worlds lie silent.

The milky clouds in far-off vales
bow down and kiss the mounts,
with unfulfilled desires in heart
I wait and wait around.

Come in the shade of this spring
who knows how long love lasts,
who knows how long this life
on the luckless ones its soothing shadows casts.

The stars, like all other days
must not be lost in dust,
come, for the eyes awake in your grief
a night’s sleep is a must.

The moon is dim, the high sky silent
in the lap of slee, the worlds lie silent.

I have been searching for a website (in English) of Urdu poetry for some time. This looks ideal. Thank you for publishing in English.

Kind regards

What a delight to come across per chance a “Gohr-e-Nayaab” Who else would write it? It had to be my Sahir! I had accidentally stumbled on this and started reading being so familiar with Sahir it did not take long for me to figure it out that it is a creation that of sahir.
