This Ghazal by Ahmed Faraz is one of my favourites and Ghulam Ali has given it the respect it deserves. Noor Jehan has also sung it beautifully and her version has been posted on the Radio as well.

terii baateN hii sunaane aaye
dost bhii dil hii dukhaane aaye

phuul khilte haiN to ham sochte haiN
tere aane ke zamaane aaye

(zamaane : seasons)

aisii kuchh chup sii lagii hai jaise
ham tujhe haal sunaane aaye

(chup : silence)

ishq tanhaa hai sar-e-manzil-e-Gham
kaun ye bojh uThaane aaye

(sar-e-manzil : near the destination; Gham : pain)

ajanbii dost hameN dekh ke ham
kuchh tujhe yaad dilaane aaye

dil DhaRaktaa hai safar ke hangaam
kaash phir ko’ii bulaane aaye

(hangaam : time)

ab to rone se bhii dil dukhtaa hai
shaayad ab hosh Thikaane aaye

kyaa kahiiN phir ko’ii bastii ujRii
log kyuuN jashn manaane aaye

so raho maut ke pahluu meN “Faraz”
niiNd kis vaqt na jaane aaye

As usual, Gulam Ali renders this beautifully. Unfortunately, the “Live in India” does not have the entire rendetion.

Brilliant play with words. Faraz is a magician with the simplest of words.
I absolutely love it!
