Ghulam Ali has not sung many Nazms, but this one by Ibn-e-Insha is really good. A rendition by Abida Parveen of the same Nazm is also available at the Radio.

ye baateN jhuuTii baateN haiN, ye logoN ne phailaa’ii haiN
tum Insha jii kaa naam na lo, kyaa Insha jii sauda’ii hain?

(saudaa’ii : melancholic)

haiN laaKhoN rog zamane meN,kyuN ishq hai rusvaa bechaaraa
haiN aur bhii vaj’heN vahshat kii, insaan ko rakhtii dukhiyaaraa
haaN ! bekal-bekal rahtaa hai vo piit meN jisne dil haaraa
par shaam se lekar sub’h talak yuuN kaun phire hai aavaaraa

(rusvaa : dishonored; vaj’heN : reasons; vahshat : loneliness; dukhiyaaraa : afflicted; bekal : restless; piit : love; aavaaraa : wanderer)

gar ishq kiyaa hai tab kyaa hai, kyuN shaad nahiN aabaad nahiiN
jo jaan liye bin Tal na sake, ye aisii bhii uftaad nahiiN
ye baat to tum bhii maanoge, vo Qais nahiiN Farhad nahiiN
kyaa hijr ka daruu mushkil hai, kyaa vasl ke nusKhe yaad nahiiN

(shaad : happy; aabaad : inhabited; uftaad : state of helplessness; Qais, Farhad : Legendary lovers; hijr : separation; daaruu : cure; vasl : meeting; nusKhe : prescription)

jo humse kaho ham karte haiN, kyaa “Insha” ko samjhaanaa hai
us laRkii se bhii kah leNge, go ab kuch aur zamaanaa hai
yaa chhoReN yaa takmiil kareN, ye ishq hai yaa afsaana hai
ye kaisaa gorak-dhandaa hai, ye kaisaa taanaa-baanaa hai

(takmiil : complete; afsaanaa : fable; gorak-dhandaa : puzzle)

ye baateN jhuuTii baateN haiN, ye logoN ne phailaa’ii haiN
tum Insha jii kaa naam na lo, kyaa Insha jii sauda’ii haiN?

woh larki achi larki hai, tum naam na lo hum jaan gaye
woh jis ke lambay gaysuu hain, pehchan gaye pehchan gaye
haan saath hamaray Insha bhi us ghar mein thay mehmaan gaye
per us se to kuch baat na ki, anjaan rahay anjaan gaye
yeh baatein jhooti baatein hain, yeh logon ne phailayi hain
tum Insha ji ka naam na lo, kya Insha ji saudayi hain?

I just love the ghazal. The meaning of difficult lyrics really helpes but can you also give a gist of the ghazal. Is it on the lines that Ishq is unnecessarily being picked by people to be maligned. And that actually its not so bad?
