This particular poem of Jan Nisar Akhtar shows in a nutshell
his depth of insight into the composite culture and ethos of India before partition, and the pain that the partition must have caused to all those who valued the spirit of oneness of the seemingly disparate religious and cultural inhabitants of this great sub-continent.
This reminds me of the indulgent and fond preface written by Jan Nisar Akhtar for Hindustani Book Trust’s memorable publication’Hindostaan Hamaaraa’, a compilation of Urdu poetry
epitomising our precious composite cultural values.

I pray that everyone has time to contemplate with himself/herself.. Not everyone can express it like Jan sahib, but, each one of us should sense life, its tribulations, and sensitivities with others instead of running past it to the common end.
