maine maanaa ke tum ek paikar-e-raana’ii ho
chaman-e-dah’r meN ruuh-e-chaman-aara’ii ho
tal’at-e-mah’r ho, firdaus kii barnaa’ii ho
bint-e-mahtaab ho, garduuN se utar aa’ii ho

(paikar-e-raana’ii : portrait of beauty; chaman-e-dah’r : terrestial garden; ruuh-e-chaman-aara’ii : soul of beautified garden; tal’at-e-mah’r : appearence as that of Sun; firdaus : heaven; barnaa’ii : youth; bint-e-mahtaab : daughter of moon; garduuN : fortune and her revolving wheel)

mujh se milne meN ab andeshaa-e-rusvaa’ii hai
maine Khud apne kiye kii ye sazaa paa’ii hai

Khaak meN aah milaa’ii hai javaanii maiN ne
shoala-zaaroN meN jalaa’ii hai javaanii maiN ne

Khvaab-gaahoN meN jagaa’ii hai javaanii maiN ne

shah’ryaaroN se raqaabat ka junuuN taarii thaa

bistar-e-maKhmal-o-sanjaab thii duniyaa merii
ek rangiin-o-hasiiN khvaab thii duniyaa merii

(bistar-e-maKhmal-o-sanjaab : bed of velvet and fur; rangiin-o-hasiiN : colorful and beautiful)

jannat-e-shauq thii begaana-e-aafat-e-samuum
dard jab dard na ho, kaavish-e-darmaaN ma’aluum
Khaak the diida-e-bebaak meN garduuN ke nujuum
bazm-e-parviiN thii nigaahoN meN kaniizoN kaa hujuum

sang ko gohar-e-naayaab-o-garaaN jaanaa thaa
dasht-e-purKhaar ko firdaus-e-javaaN jaanaa thaa
reg ko silsilaa-e-aab-e-ravaaN jaanaa thaa
aah ye raaz abhii maiN ne kahaaN jaanaa thaa

(sang : rock; gohar-e-naayaab-o-garaaN : rare and expensive gem; dasht-e-purKhaar : forest full of thorns; firdaus-e-javaaN : paradise of youth; reg : sand; aab-e-ravaaN : water flow)

merii har fat’h meN hai aik haziimat pinhaaN
har masarrat meN hai raaz-e-Gham-o-hasrat pinhaaN

(fat’h : victory; haziimat : defeat, rout; pinhaaN : hidden; masarrat : happiness; raaz-e-Gham-o-hasrat : secret of suffering and desire)

kyaa sunogii merii majruuh javaanii kii pukaar
merii fariyaad-e-jigar doz, meraa naala-e-zaar
shiddat-e-karb meN Duubii hu’ii merii guftaar
maiN ke Khud apne mazaaq-e-tarab aagiiN kaa shikaar

(majruuh : wounded; naala-e-zaar : tears of lamentation; shiddat-e-karb : intensity of grief; guftaar : flight; mazaaq-e-tarab : taste of desire; aagiiN : full)

vo gudaaz-e-dil-e-marhuum kahaaN se laauuN
ab maiN vo jazba-e-ma’asuum kahaaN se laauuN

(gudaaz-e-dil-e-marhuum : lost tender heart; jazba-e-ma’asuum : innocent passion)

mere saaye se Daro tum merii qurbat se Daro
apnii jurraat kii qasam ab merii jurraat se Daro
tum lataafat ho agar merii lataafat se Daro
mere va’ade se Daro merii muhabbat se Daro

(qurbat : proximity; jurraat : audacity; lataafat : delicateness)

ab maiN altaaf-o-inaayaat kaa sazaavaar nahiiN
maiN vafaadaar nahiiN, haaN maiN vafaadaar nahiiN

      Thanks for the nazm. A request- can you get the audio from the Kahkashan TV serial ? I seem to have lost my cassette few years back and haven’t seen the CD or cassette since then. If I am not mistaken, Kahkashan has the only serious rendition of Majaz (besides Talat’s Shehr ki raat aur main)

    5. Dear Mohib,

      Some 5 years ago I listened to this ghazal - by its theme and the way it captures the reader’s mind and soul I tend to class it as ghazal - off an Indian CD and was in search of its poet and singer. The latter I found to be Jagjit Singh but his rendition of it is short - only qata’s 1,3,6 - and leaves some ‘tashnagi’ as if it’s not ‘the whole wardaat’. How very kind of you to publish full version and gratify my soul! Thank You very much indeed. Doutless, such bejeweled portrayal of overwhelming youthful pursuite of beauty could only come from Majaz!!!
      PS- I feel replacing ‘ek’ with ‘aik’in the beginning of line 19 and ‘-o-inaayaat’ with ‘-o-inaayat’ in 3rd last line will improve verse balance.Thank you once again.

    6. “Aitaraf’ is a kind of nazm which takes me in another world which in itself is a real world which cause me to say something in my own poetry.

      Aitaraf is beyond of one’s word to explain in words.
